Combi Boilers
Choosing the Right Output for Your Home
A combination or 'combi' boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you don't need a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank in the roof space.
They are ideal for homes with limited space and are significantly more energy-efficient than older systems, as they only heat the water you actually use. This efficiency helps homeowners reduce their carbon footprint and lower energy bills simultaneously.
However, choosing the right combi boiler involves more than just selecting a brand. The output of the boiler determines how effectively it can heat your radiators and, crucially, how much hot water it can deliver to your taps and showers at any one time.
It is a common misconception that boiler selection is solely about matching numeric kW values to property size. In reality, modern heating design requires a deeper understanding of flow rates, temperature rise, and occupant demand.
Understanding Boiler Output
ⓘ The kW Number Isn't the Whole Story
- • Overall Property Size & Layout
• Number of Bathrooms & En-suites
• Number of Occupants
• Simultaneous Hot Water Demand
• Type of Existing Heating System
• Incoming Mains Water Flow Rate
• Mains Water Pressure
• Future Extensions or Requirements
At Superior Installs, we focus on installing the right boiler, not just the biggest one.
Understanding Hot Water Performance
Domestic Hot Water (DHW) performance is measured in Litres per Minute (L/min). This tells you how fast the boiler can heat water as it flows through. It is the single most important metric for shower comfort and how fast your bath will fill.
- • Higher L/min results in better shower pressure and performance.
• Faster bath fill times for family homes.
• Allows for multiple taps to be used simultaneously.
Note: Always consider Temperature Rise when looking at L/min figures.
What Is Temperature Rise (at)?
Cold Water
→ Boiler →
Hot Water
Temperature rise (at) is the difference between the incoming cold water and the outgoing hot water. For example, if your incoming cold water is 10°C and your boiler states 14 L/min at 35°C, it means it can deliver 14 litres of water every minute at a temperature of 45°C (10°C + 35°C = 45°C).
Why Temperature Rise Matters
Flow rates should never be viewed in isolation. A boiler might advertise 16 L/min, but if that is at a 30°C rise, the water will be significantly cooler than a boiler doing 14 L/min at 40°C. In the winter, when incoming cold water can drop to 5°C, a higher temperature rise capability ensures your shower stays hot.
Superior Installs carefully considers both flow rate and temperature rise when comparing combi boilers for our customers.

Important
Choosing a 40kW+ boiler requires careful property evaluation. At Superior Installs, we perform a detailed site survey to determine if your property’s cold mains water supply can sustain these high flow rates. If the incoming mains cannot supply at least the L/min value of the boiler, the boiler will not be able to deliver its advertised performance regardless of its power rating.

Can I Check My Own Cold-Water Flow Before Requesting a Survey?
Yes, you can! Checking your flow rate is a great way to get an initial idea of how a combi boiler might perform in your home. All you need is a measuring jug and a stopwatch.
Turn your cold kitchen tap on full and measure how many litres of water fill your jug in one minute. This gives you your 'static' flow rate.

Don't Oversize Your Boiler Just to Get Better Hot Water
A Combi Boiler Has Two Important Jobs
Heating Your Home
Providing warmth to your radiators or underfloor heating. This typically requires a surprisingly low output, often just 6-12kW even for larger detached homes.
Producing Instantaneous Hot Water
Heating cold water instantly from the mains to your taps. This is the heavy-lifting part and is why combi boilers have higher kW ratings like 30kW, 35kW, or 40kW.
Modern combi boilers are designed with this imbalance in mind. They might have a modest 24kW output for heating but a much higher 35kW output for hot water. This ensures you get 'hotel-standard' showers without wasting energy heating your radiators.
A high-quality boiler will 'modulate' its output. This means if it's 35kW for hot water but your home only needs 5kW for heating, the boiler will turn itself down to a lower, more efficient level while heating your rooms.
At Superior Installs, we consider BOTH your heating requirement AND your domestic hot-water demand to find the perfect middle ground.
What If My Incoming Water Supply Isn't Suitable?
If your property has a poor incoming mains water supply, simply fitting a more powerful combi boiler won't solve the problem. The boiler can only heat the water that enters it; if the pipework or pressure is insufficient, your hot water performance will suffer.
✓ Restrictive incoming pipework
✓ Partially closed stop taps
✓ Shared incoming water mains
✓ Internal pipework restrictions
✓ Ageing mains pipework
✓ Faulty isolation valves
✓ Local water supply limitations
In cases where the mains supply is significantly limited, we may recommend a system boiler combined with an unvented hot water cylinder. This setup stores hot water under pressure, providing high flow rates regardless of the incoming mains flow rate.
To get the best out of any high-performance combi boiler (35kW or 40kW), a suitable mains supply is non-negotiable.
At Superior Installs, we only recommend the correct system after a thorough assessment of your property, your water supply and your specific requirements.
Why Proper Boiler Selection Matters
Every Home Is Different
A boiler replacement is a 10–15 year investment in your home's comfort. Simply replacing an existing 30kW boiler with another 30kW model without looking at how you actually use your home can lead to years of mediocre showers or inefficient heating.
